PONY CLUB A large contingent of Bairnsdale Pony Club (BPC) riders made the trek up the highway recently for the Orbost Pony Club horse trials, with some impressive results achieved. GOLF The Golf East Gippsland ladies’ veterans event was held at Newry last week with the highlight being the hole-in one by South Pines member, Maureen Sampson, on the picturesque sixth hole. It was Sampson’s first ace and day she will never forget. (PS)
FOOTBALL Talented local footballers, Jock Overend (Wy Yung) and Jai Hayward (Omeo Benambra) recently played in the Northern Territory Football League Premier League reserves premiership for Pints, who defeated Banks by six points. Hayward has had an outstanding season, finishing runner-up in the league best and fairest, while Overend was named best player on the ground in the grand final. (PS)
SHOOTING Chelsea Beechey is the 2024 National Women’s 20-gauge champion, shooting a sensational 97/100, to top the podium in exceptional company. Beechey also finished second in “B” grade at the championships that were held last week in Wagga Wagga. (PS)
NETBALL Bairnsdale’s Alison Dwyer was named player of the match for the Gippsland Stars in its Victorian Netball League round three loss to Hawks on Wednesday night. (PS)
FOOTBALL Bairnsdale Redlegs youngsters, Jobe Froud, Wil Malady, Chidi Otuonye and Kael Frith took the field for the Gippsland Power under 16s on the weekend at Wonthaggi against the Dandenong Stingrays in a pre-season practice match. (PS)
MODEL AEROPLANES Sale and District Aeromodellers Club’s Seth Huntingford won the Australian Pattern Association’s Australian Masters event at Albury/Wodonga, a one-off annual event that is open to all flyers from Australia and internationally. This was his first competition flying in F3A, and at just 13 years of age he has knocked off the best in the country. (PS)
CRICKET Lakes Entrance Cricket Club, stalwart, Jake Le Maitre was the runner-up in the Volunteer of the Year category at the Community Cricket Awards. Le Maitre has been a wonderful servant of the club for many years in numerous capacities. (PS)
CAMPDRAFT Maffra’s Michael Hiscock and his trusty steed, Mewburn Bewick, were doing what they do best, winning the Tarwin Valley Campdraft at Dumbulk last week. (PS)
